Driving Kerala’s E-Truck Ecosystem with PM E-DRIVE scheme

Kerala, has long been one of India’s most progressive states in clean mobility. With more than 230,000 EVs registered as of March 2025 and over 10% of new vehicle sales being electric, the state has shown how targeted policies can accelerate adoption at scale.

Building on the success of its 2018 EV Policy and continued expansion of public charging infrastructure, Kerala is now poised to take the next major step: Electrifying medium- and heavy-duty freight vehicles! This shift is essential for improving air quality, meeting climate commitments, and strengthening the state’s logistics and industrial competitiveness.

The Government of India’s recently announced PM E-DRIVE scheme, with an outlay of ₹2,000 crore to support public charging infrastructure for electric trucks and buses, offers a timely opportunity to accelerate this transition. But key challenges remain: high upfront costs for e-trucks, limited model availability, financing hurdles, and the need for grid-ready, high-capacity charging. Addressing these barriers will require collaboration across government departments, utilities, logistics operators, OEMs, financiers, and technology providers.

To enable this effort, The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Kerala State Electricity Board Limited (KSEBL) are hosting a dedicated workshop to:

  • Identify high-impact freight electrification use cases in Kerala
  • Explore infrastructure deployment strategies and financing models
  • Align state efforts with national programs like PM E-DRIVE
  • Develop a coordinated roadmap for e-truck deployment

This workshop brings together decision-makers and industry leaders to shape Kerala’s next phase of clean transportation leadership.

For professionals in logistics, EV manufacturing, power utilities, clean mobility policymaking, or freight operations, this event is an opportunity to help shape one of India’s most promising pathways for freight electrification.
