Regulating the Unregulated: Closing the Emissions Gap by Fuel Fired Heaters on Electric Buses

Join us for a webinar exploring new research from Shiyue Mao and Felipe Rodriguez of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). The working paper investigates emissions from fuel-fired heaters commonly used on battery electric coaches in northern China, where winter temperatures can drop as low as -20 °C. These auxiliary devices are critical for maintaining vehicle range in cold climates, but their emissions remain largely unregulated. The study presents detailed testing data on pollutants such as greenhouse gases and particulate matter, offering valuable insights into the environmental trade-offs of FFH use. The findings point to a clear opportunity for policy action that could protect the emissions benefits of electric buses while supporting China’s transition to cleaner transport.
