Research Brief

Global electric vehicle charging infrastructure market monitor (2024)

This brief evaluates global public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure as of 2024, with emphasis on China, Europe, and the United States, which together account for most of the world’s EVs and EV chargers. The analysis excludes private chargers, battery swapping, and wireless charging.

Our analysis draws the following key conclusions:

  • The global public charging infrastructure network has grown rapidly, with China, Europe, and the United States in the lead
  • Direct current (DC) chargers make up a growing share of global public chargers
  • China has established the world’s largest public charging infrastructure network and the world’s largest EV fleet, but it lagged Europe when it came to highway charger density
  • Public chargers in China, Europe, and the United States remained concentrated in subnational markets with high EV sales, but there were notable trends toward more even geographical distribution, particularly in China
  • The world’s leading EV cities have established high-coverage public charging networks in built-up areas
  • Europe had a more decentralized and diverse public charging market compared with China and the United States
