Pathways to decarbonization: The European passenger car market, 2021–2035
The European Green Deal, which aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, targets a 90% reduction of emissions from transport by 2050. With the current requirements, the envisioned economy-wide reduction target of at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 is projected to be missed. To help close this gap, the European Commission will propose revised CO2 targets for new passenger cars and vans in July 2021. This webinar reviewed new research exploring different scenarios for strengthening the passenger car CO2 targets and how the targets could be achieved most cost-effectively. Technologies considered include further improvements of combustion engine vehicles as well as plug-in hybrid, battery, and fuel-cell electric vehicles.
