The Accelerating to Zero Coalition is a platform for signatories of the ZEV Declaration to coordinate, align activities, and amplify messaging as they fulfill their ambitious pledge.
The Issue
Cars and vans currently contribute the largest share of road transport CO2 emissions at around 60%.
The transition to zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) is accelerating with 2022 being a record-breaking year for ZEV deployment. By the end of 2022, 26 million electric cars were on the road globally, with zero emission vehicles accounting for more than 70% of the global stock, according to the International Energy Agency. The Zero Emission Vehicles Declaration (ZEV Declaration), launched at COP26 and now listing over 200 signatories, brings together the various stakeholders that have a role to play in the global ZEV transition and are all committed to at least this level of ambition. Together, they account for one in four cars and vans sold worldwide.
The Accelerating to Zero (A2Z) Coalition was founded the following year as a platform for signatories to coordinate, align activities, and amplify messaging as they fulfill their ambitious pledge that all sales of new cars and vans be zero emission by 2040, and by 2035 in leading markets.
The ICCT serves as a member of A2Z’s Steering Committee, which oversees outreach and engagement activities, hosts events, and leads recruitment efforts on behalf of the Coalition. ICCT also serves as Secretariat.

Method
Coordination and collaboration
A2Z provides implementation support for signatories, showcases examples of leadership within the ZEV community, recruits new signatories, and monitors progress on the global transition. A2Z functions as the ZEV Declaration’s extension of operations, executing activities to ensure the message of ambition represented by the Declaration is widely heard and turned into action.
