How IMO can maximize the climate benefits of its EEDI carbon intensity standards
This webinar presented new ICCT research showing why IMO should change how it regulates new ships under its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) in its fourth phase. Ahead of MEPC 79, Dr. Comer showed that adding GHGs and black carbon to the EEDI based on their 20-year global warming potentials (CO2e20) would encourage the use of low-methane-slip engines or the use of methanol. Dr. Comer stressed that a reformed EEDI would need to be complemented by other regulations, such as a low-GHG fuel standard, that control CO2e20 on a well-to-wake basis.
