Expanding ship efficiency across the maritime fleet

This webinar summarizes a recent ICCT study on the potential for increased shipping efficiency through adoption of industry-leading practices in the maritime fleet. That study was a novel analysis connecting 2011 in-use fleet characteristics, first-ever global satellite data on ship movement, and technical literature on ship efficiency technology to assess the long-term prospects for increasing shipping efficiency.

Operational efficiency varies substantially in international shipping. Industry-leading ships are about twice as efficient as industry laggards across major ship types. More widespread dissemination of technical and in-use practices followed by industry leaders could potentially reduce CO2 in absolute terms even as business-as-usual freight movement doubles.
