Fuel efficiency of mainline and regional aircraft

U.S. airlines use regional carriers with smaller jets to serve small- and medium-sized cities. Those short flights and small jets burn a lot more fuel per passenger mile. And, while the fuel efficiency of all jets has been improving, for regional jets it’s improving more slowly.
