Real-world usage of plug-in hybrid vehicles in Europe: A 2022 update

June 17, 2022, 4 pm CEST

The fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) depend on how much they are effectively driven on electricity. Studies on the real-world usage of PHEVs have shown that they are driven much less on electricity than the official values assume, which on average results in two to four times larger real-world fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) type-approval values. For vehicles certified by the more recent Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), however, there is less evidence on the fuel consumption in real-world operation.

This webinar will present the findings of a large-scale analysis on the real-world fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of WLTP type-approved PHEVs in Europe. Flowing from their findings, the presenters will offer policy recommendations to address the gap between real-world and official CO2 emission values.
