Charging infrastructure in India: Incentives under FAME II and considerations for PM E-DRIVE

India’s latest electric vehicle demand promotion policy, the Prime Minister Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, was launched on October 1, 2024 with ₹2,000 crore allocated for charging infrastructure development. This study examines the performance of the charging infrastructure component of the prior scheme, FAME II, and assesses charging infrastructure developed under it. The author also provides an overview of installed charging infrastructure in India, including the number of chargers, and shares policy considerations for charging infrastructure deployment under the latest PM E-DRIVE scheme.
