Fuel-efficiency technology trend assessment for LDVs in China: Advanced engine technology

This working paper assesses technology progress and new developments in internal combustion engines in China.

Among commercialized advanced engine technologies in China, variable valve taming/lift, gasoline direct injection, and turbo-downsizing have relatively higher penetration. Emerging technologies that appear on a couple of models include conventional cylinder deactivation, high compression ratio, direct start, and Atkinson cycle. Underdeveloped technologies that have been applied or researched in other countries but still under development in China include cooled EGR for turbo engine, miller cycle, e-boost, dynamic cylinder deactivation, homogeneous charge compression ignition/spark controlled compression ignition, and variable compression ratio.

This paper is one of a series of ICCT working paper that aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current availability, effectiveness, and future market penetration of key fuel-efficiency technologies that manufacturers are likely to use in China by 2030. This information enables a more accurate, China-specific understanding of future technology pathways.
