International Alignment of Fuel Efficiency Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles
This report, produced by American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy in collaboration with the ICCT, investigates the potential for improved alignment between the major heavy-duty vehicle efficiency programs around the world. Existing heavy-duty vehicle regulatory provisions and test procedures differ, and, accordingly, these programs promote efficiency technologies differently across the United States, Canada, the European Union, China, and Japan. The findings indicate that improved regulatory alignment in test cycles and loaded vehicle test weight provisions would pave the way for further alignment in areas like regulatory timing, testing methods, and stringency. The potential implication of the work is that movement toward aligned heavy-duty vehicle policy could help accelerate technology development and promote greater technology adoption in the global market.
